Tarot Cards: The Minor Arcana

I shared with the other day how the major arcana symbolizes the universal themes of our life. This time, I'm going to share with what the rest of the Tarot, composed of 56 cards called the minor arcana is really all about.

Just like what its name suggests, the minor arcana of a Tarot deck, when drawn during a reading, tells something about the little things in our life --- our concerns, emotions, activities... all those mundane stuff that make up the every day drama of our existence.

The 56 cards of the minor arcana are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. Let me discuss the importance of each...

Wands

This suit pertains to creativity, movement and action. It refers to enthusiasm, adventure, confidence, and the ability to take risks. It corresponds to the element Fire as its energy flows outward and generates passionate involvement.

Cups

This suit pertains to emotions and spiritual experience. It refers to inner states of consciousness, feelings and relationship patterns. The flow of energy released here is inward and is associated with the element Water with its ability to flow and fill up empty spaces.

Swords

This suit pertains to intellect, reason and thought. It is concerned with justice, truth and ethical principles. It is associated with the element Air as it symbolizes mental clarity and also refers to states of disharmony and unhappiness. The intellect must be able to balance with what the ego wants in order to achieve perfect mental balance.

Pentacles

This suit pertains to practicality, wealth, money, and material concerns. It is associated with the element Earth and the concrete requirements for working with matter. Here, our interaction with the physical world and nature is celebrated.

Take note of these things when having a tarot reading. Most of the time, with just one look of the tarot cards being drawn, you will already have a certain knowing what your Spirit Guides may be telling you by just looking at the general themes of each card.

Happy reading!
